Varsity definitely brings a fantastic American vibe to Crawley.
The bar was busy with sports fans glued to the t.v screens around the and we had to wait a few minutes before we squeezed on to the end of a table.
We grabbed a drink (of course) while mulling over the menu. There is so much to choose from. I wanted to order from this menu as though it was a tapas menu but as I looked around, I noticed the portions were quite large.
I couldn’t decide if I wanted a burger or a hot dog or pizza! I love variety but this was torture. In the end, we ordered a few dishes so that we could try a few different things.
We ordered the Chilli Cheese Fries, cheese sauce on the side ($14), Onion Rings ($8), Piggy Back ($18) and the Philly Cheese Steak Sub ($20). Total overkill on the ordering as this was for two people but we just wanted to eat guilt free food until we reached ‘food coma stage’.
We sat and took in the fun atmosphere as we awaited our food. I got the vibe that Varsity Bar is a popular haunt for students judging by the groups of customers and a good venue is a busy one.
We didn’t have to wait long for our food to start arriving. First, our Chilli Cheese Fries. The chilli con carne was packed with flavour and topped a generous portion of beer battered fries.I soared to food heaven, I was reluctant to share this one but wanted to make room for the next dishes.
Next to grace the table were the onion rings. These were also scrumptious. We literally divided this portion in half as we didn’t want the other person having anything extra. The fresh rings had that desired crunch when ordering onion rings. The rings were lightly seasoned which I favoured as it didn’t take away from the juiciness of the dish.
Next up were the Piggy Back and Philly Cheese Steak Sub. Can I just saw WoW!
These are the best hot dogs I’ve ever had. The addition of the pulled pork made it a meat feast that was hard to finish. It was tender and juicy and simply delicious. The bun was fresh and the hot dog itself was perfect. Overall, a great menu choice.
This was one of my favourite parts, the Philly Cheese Steak Sub. The sub was packed with meat and each bite took me to heaven, this was the one I didn’t want to share! Think soft, tender and packed with flavour.
Personally, I wasn’t a fan of the cheese whip (I asked for it on the side) but Mr. T loved it. For me, I thought it was a little strong but if you love cheese, you will enjoy it on the sub.
Both of the dishes came with a side of crunchy Fries. The serving was generous, but we had so much food that we couldn’t finish it.
This is the perfect menu for guilt free food and somewhere worth visiting when you having ‘one of those days’.
