Mary Street Bakery | Mount Lawley

Finally I made it to Mary Street Bakery!
It’s been on my list for quite some time and I’ve went twice before but the queue was too long.
We grabbed a table inside on arrival and browsed the menu. I hadn’t looked at the menu before but I wasn’t seeing anything in particular I was dying to try out, I’m not sure what all the fuss is about.
In the end, I panic ordered the Mescal Cured Salmon ($23) and a coffee to wash it all down. Mr. T went for the Fried Chicken Buttermilk Pancake ($22), also accompanied by a coffee.

I quickly ducked out to take a phone call and our coffees had arrived! I must say, it was a great coffee.

My food arrived first and I was really disappointed instantly. It looks pretty but I don’t like paying $23 for a pretty dish. I knew that I wouldn’t be full leaving and immediately regretted not ordering something else.
The dish was small and simple. It really was as simple as it looks, a sliver of salmon on top of fresh bread with a few bits of salad to bulk it up…meh! The only positives were the ability to poach the egg perfectly and the fresh rounds of bread. Not impressive at all, I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to a hungry person!

On the other hand, Mr. T’s was the exact opposite to mine!

Mr. T had a dish he couldn’t finish so I ended up trying to fill myself up by eating his leftovers. The pancake was light and fluffy and truly delicious! The fried chicken was a well cooked and tender portion. This was topped by a fried egg. The only criticism of this dish was the amount of maple syrup, it was a little too much for the size of the pancake. I would order this dish, if I ever come again, and ask for the maple syrup on the side.

I think that if I had only wanted a light meal and liked salad, I might have liked menu options. I was after a good breakfast and only that Mr. T couldn’t finish his, I would have wasted $23 on a meal that I didn’t enjoy and left hungry.
I don’t think I’ll be in a hurry to go back but it seems to be a pretty busy place so obviously there are people other there who like it.

In the area, I would highly recommend Fez Cafe for a great breakfast.
