Abacus. | South Yarra

Abacus has been popping up on my social media for quite some time so we decided to see what all the fuss was about!

On arrival, I found the layout very interesting. I loved the few tables facing out to the street, perfect for a glass of wine while watching the world go by. Ms. D would love it! The decor is interesting and incorporates a few different styles which ensures there is a lot to look at!

We took a seat and ordered our usual Long Blacks as we browsed the menu. I was immediately drawn to the Croquettes of speck & gruyere ($18) and the Baked Beans ($..) I decided on the Baked Beans with a side of rasher ($6) in the end. Mr. B went straight to the Flat Iron Steak ($22).

Coffee arrived shortly after we ordered. The sugar was in a little brown sack on the table, this was different!

Our food arrived together and as you know, that is always a big tick in my books! The only thing that cause us a problem was the size of the table, it was too small to fit three full size dishes and a side dish.

Back to Mr. B’s dish, the steak was sizzling on arrival. It was just about medium/rare so as he took it off the stone, it was perfect. It was served with unleavened bread and some fresh vegetables. The only thing that Mr. B would have changed was to add a little more moisture to the dish as the wasabi custard didn’t last very long. He said that he would order it with an egg next time… he loves his eggs!

My dish was exactly what I was hoping for, a big bowl of beans smothered in a tomato sauce! It was served with a large piece of pumpkin that was a little undercooked but I didn’t mind as it didn’t add anything to the dish. My egg was perfect and the cheesy toast on the side was scrumptious. If there was another slice of that cheesy toast, I would have been in heaven. I was happy that I added the rasher to my dish but for $6 a portion, I thought it would have been a bigger portion.

All in all, we would love order our dishes again and maybe try some different sides with them. I am keen to try out the evening menu, some of those pizzas and share plates sound amazing!
