One of the greatest things about Melbourne is the variety of cafes and restaurants we have to choose from when we want to dine out. My choice of cafe as of late has had to become a little more particular as Mr. B is following a vegan diet and I still love eggs for breakfast.
I found SMAK in the usual way, spotted a picture on social media and had to look up the menu. It offers great variety to those with different requirements when on the search for breakfast. It is tucked away past The Olsen Hotel with a few seats outside and lots of space inside.
We grabbed two seats by the window and browsed the menu. Mr. B was happy that his choice wasn’t limited to an acaci bowl or porridge, he had quite a few options. He ended up deciding on the Earth Burger with Sweet Potato Fries ($19.50) I wanted to try the Moroccan Pumpkin & Chickpea Fritters ($17) + Bacon ($5) with two coffees of course.
My dish looked amazing! I took off the avocado as I am not a fan but Mr. B said it was nice. Once my egg was pierced, the yolk ran down the sides of the fritters and I knew it was going to be tasty. I didn’t think that the dish looked overly big but the fritters were rather filling, I was still glad I added bacon. The smashed coconut peas were light in flavour and didn’t take away from the dish but the puffed rice noodle didn’t really go with the dish. Overall, I really enjoyed it!
Mr. B’s dish was the opposite of mine…quite a huge portion! This was his first time eating a burger out and this one really surprised him, he said the burger was delicious and the pickled red cabbage was very tasty. The sweet potato fries were the perfect accompaniment as they were crunchy and not a bit oily. Needless to say, he would certainly order it again.
It is safe to say that we will definitely be back! There was a lot of choice on the menu for both of us and there are certainly a few other things I would like to try out!
